Amazon Prime

So this one bothers me a bit. I would really like to give Amazon Prime as a gift, but Amazon does not make it easy. In fact, here’s a discussion forum dating back to 2010 with many Amazon customers hoping to buy Amazon Prime as a gift. Sadly, there exists no easy way to give this as a gift.

But here’s why I think you should do it the hard way. Amazon Prime gets you:

  • Free 2-day shipping on products from Amazon
  • Free Instant Streaming of 1000’s of movies and TV shows
  • Free borrowing of a book from Kindle’s Lending Library
Rather than buying a book or two for a loved one, you buy them twelve books. Rather than a movie, you buy them access to thousands. And don’t underestimate the power of two-day shipping. That quick turnaround is good enough that if you forget to get shampoo at the grocery store, you can have a bottle shipped to you before your old bottle runs out.

At $79, it can be a little pricey, but you can also share. So it can be a great gift for a couple. My wife and I share Amazon Prime and really enjoy it.

Unfortunately, because you can’t give it as a gift, you have to get a little creative. Here’s what I’d do: here are lists of movies and TV shows and available lending books… I’d pick some that the recipient(s) would enjoy, and print them  off with the images. Then (and this is the sad part) write a check for the $79. Then, on the big day like Christmas morning, hop on their Amazon account and sign them up before they can bring up any objections!

It’d be nice if it were easier. But it’s worth it anyway!
